Saarang: Transforming a Rubber Plantation into a Thriving Food Forest

GoodEarth Saarang is a holistic eco-village designed to blend sustainable living with ecological restoration. Nestled in the foothills of the Western Ghats, it is a community that fosters harmony between people and nature, built on the principles of regenerative agriculture, biodiversity, and conscious living.

Land was once a monoculture rubber plantation, depleting soil health and biodiversity. At GoodEarth, we saw the potential to restore the land and took the initiative to regenerate it into a thriving food forest - a model for sustainable living.

By restoring soil health, introducing native species, fruit trees, spices, and medicinal plants, and implementing natural water conservation systems, Saarang is evolving into a self-sustaining ecosystem. The return of butterflies, birds, and pollinators marks the revival of biodiversity, while regenerative farming practices ensure the land nourishes both people and nature.

A Vision for Sustainable Living

Along with the food forest, we are shaping Saarang into a holistic eco-village—a place where nature and community come together in harmony. Designed to offer a sustainable way of life, Saarang integrates eco-conscious homes, regenerative agriculture, natural water systems, and thoughtfully designed community spaces.

Spread across 27 acres, the village is built on the principles of sustainable living, ecological restoration, and shared experiences. While 15 acres are dedicated to residential communities, the remaining 12 acres are being transformed into a regenerative food forest that will provide fresh, organic produce while restoring the land’s natural balance.

Here is the Progress of Our First Holistic Eco-Village

Diversity in Plantation

We are proud to cultivate over 20 varieties of plantains, including rare types like red banana and blue java. These varieties add richness to the farm's biodiversity while supporting sustainable farming practices.

Sustainable Farming Practices

Our commitment to conservation and rehabilitation drives our farming approach. We focus on:

  • Increasing biodiversity: Creating a harmonious ecosystem.

  • Soil coverage: Using plants and organic matter to protect and enrich the soil.

  • Water retention: Improving soil’s capacity to hold water for healthier plants.

  • Climate impact: Promoting practices that potentially mitigate climate change.

Core practices

  • Cover cropping to protect soil and add nutrients.

  • Composting to recycle organic waste into rich fertilizer.

  • Agroforestry for a sustainable mix of trees and crops.

Host plants for different types of butterflies.

The farm is home to host plants that attract a variety of butterfly species, including the common mime and zebra blue. These plants provide food and shelter for their eggs, larvae, and pupae, creating a vibrant ecosystem filled with colorful butterflies from across the region.

Beehive Inspection

This week, our team, led by Mr. Biju T. and Mr. Gopinath M., inspected the beehive to monitor the queen’s performance. Finding larvae and eggs confirmed a healthy and thriving colony. This midday inspection highlighted the essential role bees play in pollination and ecosystem health on the farm.

Irrigation and Water Conservation

  • Modern irrigation methods: We utilize sprinkler and drip irrigation to ensure soil moisture is consistently maintained, promoting robust plant growth and weather pattern development.

  • Natural water sources: A river alongside the farm provides a reliable water supply.

  • Rainwater harvesting: A sustainable way to conserve water for long-term use.
